The 5-Minute Website Audit for Local Trades

Is your website actually capturing leads, or is it just acting as an expensive digital brochure? You do not need to be a web developer to figure this out. Here is a 5-minute audit you can do right now to see if your website is costing you jobs.
1. The "Three Second" Test
Open your website on your phone. Count to three.
In those three seconds, can a completely new visitor answer these three questions?
- What exactly do you do?
- Where exactly do you do it?
- How do I contact you right now?
If your hero section (the very top of the site) says something vague like "Quality You Can Trust," you are failing this test. It needs to say: "Emergency Plumber in Newcastle. Available 24/7."
2. The Click-to-Call Check
Still on your phone, look for your phone number. Tap it.
Did it instantly open your phone's dialer, ready to call? Or did it do nothing, forcing the user to try and highlight the text, copy it, open their phone app, and paste it?
Over 60% of local service searches happen on mobile. If your phone number is not a clickable link (or worse, if it's embedded in an image), you are losing leads to competitors who make it easier to call them.
3. The "Next Step" Clarity
Scroll through your homepage. What do you want the visitor to do?
Most websites suffer from "CTA (Call To Action) Confusion." They have buttons saying "Learn More," "About Us," "Our Services," and "Contact" all fighting for attention.
A Smart Website has one clear, primary goal. For most trades, it's "Request a Quote" or "Book a Call." That primary button should stand out in a bright contrast colour, and it should be repeated multiple times as the user scrolls down the page.
4. The Trust Factor
People are sceptical of trades they haven't used before. Does your homepage immediately build trust? Look for:
- Real photos of you/your team (not perfect stock photos of models in clean hardhats)
- Real Google reviews embedded on the page
- Clear licensing and insurance badges
- Local area mentions
5. The "What Happens Next" Form
Go to your contact form. How many fields does it have? If you are asking for their fax number, home address, and a 500-word essay on their problem, they will abandon the form.
Keep it simple: Name, Phone, Email, and a brief description of the issue.
More importantly, what happens when you submit it? Does it just say "Message Sent"? A Smart Website connects that form directly to a CRM, instantly texts the customer confirming you received it, and alerts your team to follow up immediately.
How Did You Score?
If you failed more than one of these tests, your website is likely leaking leads. A website shouldn't just be an online business card; it should be an active system that captures enquiries and drives business growth.
